Cooling load

What it takes to run a box fan on battery power

This page keeps the planning defaults visible so you can replace them with measurements from your own appliance.

Running load
60 W
A 20-inch box fan on its highest setting. Lower settings draw substantially less.
Starting load
120 W
A labelled planning default. Startup is the usual reason a station with plenty of energy still shuts down.
Duty cycle
100%
Share of each hour the appliance actually draws its running load.

Our answer

A box fan is a modest motor load, and its selected speed plus continuous operating time matter more than a brief startup.

What an outage actually looks like with this load

A box fan can provide useful personal cooling and air movement without trying to refrigerate a room. Its motor draws continuously while running, and lower speed may reduce both airflow and energy use. Placement matters: exhausting hot air, drawing cooler air at the right time, or directing flow across people can accomplish more than running it aimlessly. Keep guards clear, do not use the fan where water can reach it, and compare speeds with a meter because controls and motors vary by model.

The mistake people make sizing it

The sizing mistake is assuming every speed setting draws the same power or delivers the same useful result. Some users also leave a large station inverter awake solely for one small fan. Measure each practical setting, then consider a compatible direct-current fan if low-load efficiency matters. Choose placement and schedule first, since moving air strategically can reduce the time the fan needs to run.

What each current record does with this load

A runtime appears only after the electrical fit clears. The comparison checks voltage, continuous output, and startup demand before it calculates stored-energy runtime. If a station fails a gate, the table leaves runtime out instead of presenting a number you cannot use.

A station showing no runtime failed voltage, continuous output, or startup demand. An unverified figure means one requirement could not be checked against published evidence.

What moves this number most

Fan speed is the whole story. Running a box fan on low instead of high can roughly halve the energy it uses over a night.

How to measure your own

Read the nameplate or data label for voltage and rated amps or watts, then run the appliance through a normal cycle on a plug-in energy meter for 24 hours. Use the measured watt-hours in the calculator instead of the default on this page.

Put the measured figure into the runtime calculator rather than relying on a default. When this load shares a battery with others, the outage load planner sizes the whole set together.

Questions that change the decision

Does a lower fan speed always save energy?

It often does, but the amount depends on the motor and speed-control design. A meter can show the difference on your fan. Lower speed may also be more comfortable and quieter for continuous use. Judge the setting by useful airflow at the person or opening, since a small saving is irrelevant if poor placement makes the fan run longer.

Would a direct-current fan be more efficient?

It can avoid inverter overhead and may suit long, low-power operation well. Compare airflow, connector compatibility, and measured source energy rather than assuming every direct-current product is efficient. A smaller fan close to the user may outperform a large box fan across the room. Keep an appropriate guard and follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions regardless of power source.

Can a fan make a closed hot room safe?

A fan moves air but does not lower the room’s air temperature, and air movement may be inadequate in severe heat. Follow public-health heat guidance, hydrate as appropriate, reduce heat gain, and relocate to a cooler place when needed. Do not treat battery-powered airflow as a substitute for a heat emergency plan or medically necessary cooling.
