What it takes to run a dehumidifier on battery power

Power draw for a dehumidifier moves with size far more than with brand, and the certified range spans several times over. A single figure cannot describe it honestly, so this page does not use one.

Our answer

A dehumidifier is a cycling compressor load whose energy use follows moisture conditions, so a dry-room test can badly understate post-storm operation.

What a dehumidifier actually draws

Size changes the answer. This table groups every dehumidifier in the current ENERGY STAR dataset by pint per day, so the comparison follows the choice you make in a store rather than a single category average.

Dehumidifier power draw by pint per day, across 526 certified models
Pint per dayTypical drawRange across modelsModelsOn a 1,024Wh station
Under 25 pints per day258 W19.7 to 289.1 W2606.2 hours
25 to 39 pints per day346 W263.6 to 372.7 W974.7 hours
40 to 49 pints per day488 W395.6 to 490.4 W1693.3 hours

These are running figures derived from each model’s own certified efficiency rating. They describe the draw while the appliance is actually working, not an average across a season. Figures are the median and full range across the ENERGY STAR Certified Dehumidifiers, retrieved 2026-09-21. Certified models skew efficient, so an older appliance may draw more than the range shown.

What an outage actually looks like with this load

After water intrusion or humid weather, a dehumidifier may run far more persistently than it does while maintaining an already dry basement. The compressor adds a startup event, the fan moves air, and some units pause or behave differently as the collection bucket fills or a drain arrangement changes. Because moisture damage develops over time, the load competes with sump pumping, refrigeration, and ventilation during the same outage. Track humidity, fix active water entry first, and measure the actual appliance under wet conditions.

The mistake people make sizing it

The common mistake is using a maintenance-day energy reading for a storm-recovery plan. Once damp materials and outside air become moisture sources, the machine may spend much more time actively drying. Record energy and humidity during a genuinely demanding period, verify compressor startup, and ensure the drain path works without powered accessories you forgot to count. Do not present dehumidification as a substitute for stopping water entry.

What each current record does with this load

A runtime appears only after the electrical fit clears. The comparison checks voltage, continuous output, and startup demand before it calculates stored-energy runtime. If a station fails a gate, the table leaves runtime out instead of presenting a number you cannot use.

A station showing no runtime failed voltage, continuous output, or startup demand. An unverified figure means one requirement could not be checked against published evidence.

What moves this number most

Humidity level drives the duty cycle completely. A dehumidifier in a wet basement after a storm runs far closer to continuously than one maintaining an already dry room.

How to measure your own

Read the nameplate or data label for voltage and rated amps or watts, then run the appliance through a normal cycle on a plug-in energy meter for 24 hours. Use the measured watt-hours in the calculator instead of the default on this page.

Put the measured figure into the runtime calculator rather than relying on a default. When this load shares a battery with others, the outage load planner sizes the whole set together.

Questions that change the decision

Why does the unit run almost continuously after a storm?

The air, walls, floor, furnishings, and stored items can all release moisture, while outdoor humidity may continue entering the space. The dehumidifier is no longer maintaining a stable room; it is removing a continuing moisture load. That makes mild-weather cycling a poor guide. Watch measured humidity and energy together so the backup plan reflects actual recovery conditions.

What happens when the collection bucket fills?

Many portable units stop dehumidifying when their bucket is full, but behavior is model-specific. During an outage, a stopped compressor may look like excellent energy performance while no moisture is being removed. Check the manual, confirm the indicator state, and plan safe emptying or a gravity drain. Count any condensate pump separately if the drain depends on one.

Should dehumidification take priority over the sump pump?

Active water removal normally comes first because a dehumidifier cannot keep pace with continuing bulk water entry. The priorities depend on the building and event, but a portable battery should not be spread so thin that the drainage plan fails. Stop or manage the water source, maintain alarms, then use remaining power for moisture control and air movement.
