Our answer
Television backup is set by screen technology, size, brightness, and viewing time, with no meaningful motor startup to solve.
What a television actually draws
Size changes the answer. This table groups every television in the current ENERGY STAR dataset by inch screen, so the comparison follows the choice you make in a store rather than a single category average.
| Inch screen | Typical draw | Range across models | Models | On a 1,024Wh station |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 32 inches and under | 24.1 W | 9.3 to 35.6 W | 18 | 34 hours |
| 35 to 44 inches | 63 W | 45.1 to 77.8 W | 14 | 13 hours |
| 45 to 52 inches | 74 W | 61.3 to 89.7 W | 18 | 11 hours |
| 53 to 59 inches | 99 W | 64.4 to 113.6 W | 23 | 8.2 hours |
| 60 to 69 inches | 119 W | 84.6 to 134.5 W | 23 | 6.8 hours |
| 70 inches and over | 167 W | 119.5 to 343.5 W | 29 | 4.9 hours |
These are on-mode figures: the appliance draws this much whenever it is switched on. Figures are the median and full range across the ENERGY STAR Certified Televisions, retrieved 2026-09-21. Certified models skew efficient, so an older appliance may draw more than the range shown.
What an outage actually looks like with this load
A television is a discretionary, fairly steady load once the picture is on, but its demand moves with picture mode and screen content. Bright showroom settings can spend more energy than a restrained home setting. Sound systems, streaming boxes, game consoles, and antennas are separate loads and may rival the display in a complete entertainment setup. During an outage, reduce brightness, power only the source device you need, and decide whether news access would be served more efficiently by a smaller screen.
The mistake people make sizing it
People often measure the television while forgetting the devices that make it useful. A receiver, console, soundbar, streaming box, or powered antenna may remain active beside it. Put the complete viewing setup on the meter, then repeat the test with a practical low-brightness mode. Do not borrow consumption from another screen size or panel type only because both products are called smart televisions.
What each current record does with this load
A runtime appears only after the electrical fit clears. The comparison checks voltage, continuous output, and startup demand before it calculates stored-energy runtime. If a station fails a gate, the table leaves runtime out instead of presenting a number you cannot use.
| Power station | Capacity | Continuous output | Estimated runtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal Zero Yeti 300 | 296.96 Wh | 350 W | 2.8 hours |
| Goal Zero Yeti 700 | 677.37 Wh | 600 W | 6.3 hours |
| BLUETTI AC70 | 768 Wh | 1,000 W | 7.2 hours |
| Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 | 1,024 Wh | 2,000 W | 9.5 hours |
| Goal Zero Yeti 1500 | 1,505.28 Wh | 2,000 W | 14 hours |
| Anker SOLIX C2000 Gen 2 | 2,048 Wh | 2,400 W | 19 hours |
| Anker SOLIX F3000 | 3,072 Wh | 3,600 W | 29 hours |
| Anker SOLIX F3800 | 3,840 Wh | 6,000 W | 36 hours |
| Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus | 5,040 Wh | 7,200 W | 47 hours |
A station showing no runtime failed voltage, continuous output, or startup demand. An unverified figure means one requirement could not be checked against published evidence.
What moves this number most
Brightness setting matters more than screen size on modern sets. A television in a bright-room picture mode can draw twice what the same set uses in a calibrated mode.
How to measure your own
Read the nameplate or data label for voltage and rated amps or watts, then run the appliance through a normal cycle on a plug-in energy meter for 24 hours. Use the measured watt-hours in the calculator instead of the default on this page.
Put the measured figure into the runtime calculator rather than relying on a default. When this load shares a battery with others, the outage load planner sizes the whole set together.
Questions that change the decision
Does lowering brightness make a useful difference?
It often does, although the effect varies by display technology and picture mode. Choose a setting that remains comfortably visible in the room rather than using a bright retail preset. Measure the television after the image has settled, because menus and automatic picture features can change behavior. Lowering room light may let you reduce screen brightness without sacrificing usability.
Do streaming devices belong in the calculation?
Every required streaming device belongs in the calculation. Count the box, receiver, sound system, network equipment, or game console used to produce the program. Some remain active after the screen is turned off. Meter the shared power strip during actual viewing and again in standby so you know which devices should be unplugged when the outage plan prioritizes energy conservation.
Is a smaller television always more efficient?
A smaller screen often needs less energy, but panel technology, brightness, image processing, and settings prevent a universal rule. The certified-model information on the page is more useful than diagonal size alone. For your own plan, measure the exact set in its normal picture mode and compare that with a lower-energy mode you would genuinely use during an outage.
