The first well-pump question is voltage. Battery size comes later.

Many submersible pumps require 240V, while common portable stations provide only 120V. A soft-start 115V pump can be a different engineering problem from a conventional 240V motor.

A 120V-only station cannot directly run a 240V well pump. For a compatible 115V soft-start pump, use the exact motor input and manufacturer sizing guidance. Grundfos documents SQE variants across 100 to 115V and 200 to 240V, with soft start and model-specific nameplate values.

Why horsepower is not enough

Horsepower describes mechanical output. Electrical input also reflects motor efficiency, power factor, operating head, and control design. Two pumps with the same horsepower can present different loads to an inverter.

Grundfos recommends sizing a generator from the documented input P1 with added margin for the cited SQE system. That model-specific approach is more defensible than a universal horsepower multiplier.

What soft start changes

A conventional direct-on-line motor may draw a large inrush current. The cited Grundfos SQ/SQE design ramps the motor and documents start current behavior around the nameplate maximum, reducing the abrupt electrical event.

That does not prove compatibility with every portable station. The station still needs the correct voltage, grounding arrangement, continuous output, and support for the pump controls.

When professional design is required

A hardwired 240V pump, transfer equipment, or connection to home circuits is electrical-system work. Use listed transfer equipment and a qualified electrician. Never make a male-to-male cable or backfeed a panel from a portable receptacle.
